Travel Juneau is a marketing company that focuses on bringing awareness about everything Juneau has to offer. We sat down with CEO Liz Perry to talk about the best ways to explore our beautiful Southeast Alaskan city.
“There is such a mystique about the state itself, and I think the Inside Passage—just because of its remoteness and its general beauty and all of these fjords, these thousands of small islands, these forested coastlines—it makes it a place unto itself. I believe that it is just a function of the natural beauty. And Juneau being nestled right up against the Tongass National Rainforest is a wonderful asset for us,” says Perry.
There’s just so much to do here recreationally, she says. Juneau is the biggest port and the biggest town. This is a turnaround point for small cruises and major disembarkation point for big cruises.
Juneau is great for groups because if a person is organizing a trip Travel Juneau can help make referrals to get them to the experiences the group wants to have. The top three things have to be the Mendenhall Glacier, the water and the art scene in town.
“There is the possibility of seeing artists at work and really getting the full experience,” Perry says. There are many Alaska Native artists that have their work displayed or for sale in shops downtown.
Heritage Square, downtown at the corner of Front and Seward Streets, has just been redone and incorporates Alaska Native Tlingit art.
“The intersection of Front and Seward Streets represents the symbolic center of Juneau’s cultural, historical and economic fabric, located near the Capitol, the Sealaska Corporation and Heritage Institute, City Hall, the downtown business district and the cruise ship docks and is on Juneau’s original shoreline,” a City and Borough of Juneau resolution states.
